There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gambling is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to cross, there are means around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that highlights a number of conveniences aside from the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
